Battle of Columbus Interactive Map

Experience the Battle of Columbus through this interactive map created by CSU Archives which includes troop placements and defensive fortifications. Often called the last battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Columbus took place on April 16, 1865, just a few days after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.

The interactive map also highlights Columbus as a whole during the Civil War with important points of interests such as Columbus businesses and homes of prominent individuals all highlighted in this digital exhibit. Unique items from the collections of the CSU Archives and the Columbus Museum help tell the story, such as Colonel Von Zinken’s original letter telling local citizens to get out of town and many historic photographs representing Columbus during the Civil War.

The battle is certainly an important part of Columbus’ history. Some of the city's most fascinating stories come from this time, such as Randolph L. Mott, John Pemberton, Henry Benning, the Eagle Mills, Haiman’s Sword Factory, the CSS Jackson, and many others.
For more information, be sure to view the Battle of Columbus Map webpage, or, CSU libraries official page, or the CSU Archives

CSU Libraries’ Suggested Poetry to Read for National Poetry Month

Since President Bill Clinton’s issued proclamation in 1996, April is annually celebrated as National Poetry Month. Each year, the Academy of American Poets and others around the country and global celebrate, encourage and increase awareness and appreciation of poetry.

The poetry celebration is one of the most awaited celebrations for literati, poets and bibliophiles. The Found Poetry Review invites and encourages poets to participate in their annual National Poetry Month project, PoMoSco. The project is an opportunity for poets, of any experience level or publication history, to earn more than 30 merit badges and all poetry, for PoMoSco, will be posted on a centralized site to encourage others to particularly focus their attention to poetry.

CSU libraries encourage students and patrons to participate and read various selections of poetry. For this year’s poetry month, CSU libraries suggests poets, writers, and all patrons to review and read as much poetry as possible to help spread the awareness and increase the appreciation for poetry.
