Happy Pi Day, 2013

Pi, Greek letter (), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. According to the Pi Day website, Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational and transcendental number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for Pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

In honor of Pi Day, you're invited to discover MathSciNet®. MathSciNet® is an electronic publication within GALILEO which offers access to a carefully maintained and easily searchable database of reviews, abstracts and bibliographic information for much of the mathematical sciences literature. Over 100,000 new items are added each year, most of them classified according to the Mathematics Subject Classification. MathSciNet® contains over 2 million items and over 1 million direct links to original articles. Bibliographic data from retrodigitized articles dates back to the early 1800s. Reference lists are collected and matched internally from approximately 450 journals, and citation data for journals, authors, articles and reviews is provided.

Happy Pi Day! Happy Discovery!

Kimberly’s Bunny Gets a Wild Hair

Once upon a time, there was a sweet little bunny who visited the Schwob Library.  He was told emphatically by his Kimberly to stay inside his warm backpack.  When he saw the beautiful paintings by Librarian Tom (Ganzevoort) and the cool lime green chairs, the temptation was far too great.  The curious little bunny decided to experience the library for himself.

For almost 48 hours, the little bunny ran to and fro looking at all of the great things the library has to offer.  He especially loved the Audubon magazine as he happens to be an avid bird watcher.  He thought to himself that it would be fun to read “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk” by David Sedaris in the McNaughton Collection.  Little did he know that his Kimberly was terribly worried.  She wrote letters to both friends and strangers telling them that her little bunny was lost.  She posted flyers outside of the library which told the plight of her little friend.

When the little bunny became very, very hungry, he made his way to the vending area at the library’s entrance.  It was there that a Cougar named Jane (she’s a CSU student) found the lost, hungry little bunny.  That afternoon, Jane became a hero, Kimberly’s heart was mended, and the sweet little bunny went home with wonderful memories of his fun library adventure.

Moral of the Story:  There’s no place like home especially if you’re a little lost bunny without your cell phone.
