New Government Documents Exhibition Features Political History Selections

During the last weeks of the spring semester, be sure to visit the new Government Documents Exhibition curated by Jesse Chariton. Explore new and interesting topics about political cartoons, American politics and American political history before the end of the year and spring graduations. 

Located near the Express Einstein’s Bros. Bagels, its new location, on the first floor of the main library, the exhibition highlights multiple selections of various historical events and topics.

Titles like, Blind Justice: Jacobus tenBroek and the Vision of Equality, Thomas Jefferson's Library: A Catalog with the Entries in His Own Order, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four, and Herblock's History: Political Cartoons from the Crash to the Millennium are just a few selections that the exhibition displays. Other major themes like Russian politics, library history, and other selections that cover the evolution of technology will be up for the month of May.

New Government Documents Exhibition Features American Military History And Civil War

Outside of CSU’s National Library Week festivities, there are additional events happening around CSU libraries. Near The Express Einstein Bros. Bagels, located on the first floor of the Schwob Memorial Library, exhibits the new Government Documents exhibition.  

This is one of many Government Documents exhibitions displayed this semester. Patrons of the library and foodies of Einstein’s Bagels are invited and encouraged to review the exhibition and any other Government Document exhibition.

The current exhibition features historical elements of The Civil War and was curated by CSU Technical Services Assistant and graduate student, Jesse Chariton. Along with other highlighted areas the historical war and period, American military history is also a featured theme in the collection.

"The purpose of the whole endeavor is to promote the use of Government Documents, in general, by showing that books exist in the collection which are of interest to all majors" Chariton added. Previous displays included NASA/Space Exploration, Current Events, Black History and Women's History month. 

Largely, Government publications provide additional and more information on a wide range of academic areas and time periods. Commons types of information are statistical and reference works, bibliographies, handbooks, reports, studies, maps and others.

Government Documents Collection Exhibits Colorful Women’s History Month Selection

This March, the Simon Schwob Memorial library celebrates multiple iconic women who have inspired much of American history and this institution. The Government Documents Collection, on the first floor of the Schwob Library, is exhibiting a special assortment highlighting prolific, intriguing professions and the lives of several, significant women. This small collection, reiterating the importance of women’s history, will remain up in the Government Documents Collection, for the rest of March, Women’s History month.

Works such as 33 Years of Army Nursing by Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap and Women in Congress, 1917–2006, one of the most commemorative and endorsed work on the 229 women who have served in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, profiles 74 women member of the 109^th Congress and history before the first woman elected to Congress, Jeannette Rankin. Selections pertaining to subjects about military activities, political studies, medical and physical education and other subjects expand the literature, already available, about women’s history.

67th United States Secretary of State and former First Lady and U.S. Senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Tributes Delivered in Congress 2001-2009 is also available in the Government Documents Collection. Clinton, along with, First lady Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Pat Nixon are the only First Ladies, yet, to have earned and hold a graduate degree. Clinton remains the only first lady elected to a public office—the U.S. Senate, and to seek presidency.

Outside of exhibiting selections about women’s history, there are multiple works in the McNaughton Collection that may interest readers attracted to women’s history and gender studies. Answering the Call: The U.S. Army Nurse Corps, 1917-1919: A commemorative Tribute to Military Nursing in World War I is another colorful selection students and military-afflicted patrons will enjoy. Explore topics about  NASA and space with our display next to McNaughton collection on the first floor of Simon Schwob Memorial Library. Subjects range from the psychology of space exploration to cases about Roswell, New Mexico.

With NASA's upcoming Orion launch in December that will be the beginning of a program dedicated to human exploration of mars, it's a great time to brush up on what is outside our own world.
