Introducing AVON - CSU's New Film Database

CSU Libraries is happy to announce that its new film database, AVON (Academic Films Online), is now available.

AVON includes scholarly video material of virtually every video type: documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs and newsreels, field recordings, commercials, demonstrations, original and raw footage including tens of thousands of exclusive tiles.  There are thousands of award-winning films, Academy, Emmy, and Peabody winners along with the most frequently used films for classroom instruction, plus newly released films and previously unavailable archival material.

AVON is accessible online through the GALILEO portal.  Once in GALILEO, select databases A-Z, pick "A," then scroll to the bottom of the list for AVON.  Alternatively, you can access AVON directly online at:   http://www.galileo.usg.edu/express?link=avoc-col1

The Kanopy film database is now mediated.  Only films that have been licensed during the last year are available. 

To search for available films online, please visit AVON, Films on Demand and Medici.tv.  All of these resources are available in GALILEO.

5 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do at the Schwob Library

The CSU Libraries encourage scholastic integrity and studious work ethic both on campus and off-campus while students are away on spring break. For many students and patrons of the Simon Schwob Memorial library, it may become harder to him or her to find activities or things to do in the library. Here are a few suggestions that may interest all readers and visitors of the Schwob library.

5. Become a Film Buff
The main campus library, the Schwob Memorial Library, offers a wide variety of films, productions and television shows available to check out to use in the library. While many are away on spring break, the CSU libraries’ film collection might interest many, compared to reading a novel or article. CSU libraries also manage Films on Demand that consists of 7,000 video titles and includes the new collection of United Newsreels, an additional 260 titles to the film collection.

4. Get Ahead on Summer Reading

The summer season is often filled with sunscreen, planned vacations, and a “good read.” There are many databases, such as Galileo, Gil-Find, and others to help avid readers compile a summer reading list. Book clubs, English majors, and other avid readers are encouraged to use the services and databases to compose a summer reading list too cool for the summer heat ahead. 3.  Catch up on Current Events

It is often hard for students and educators to catch up on social and current events. While most of the campus will be away, reading the local, state and national major newspapers is always encouraged in the library. Not only are newspapers available but so are other publications, i.e., academic journals, government documents, and magazines.

2. Finish Assignments and Study

One of the most snubbed feature of the library is the consist quietness that many, if not most, students appreciate on the first floor of the Schwob library. With a large portion of CSU students away, the Schwob library is one of the best places on campus to study, meet up with classmates to commune, and study together.

1. Explore

Many people come in and out the library with set objectives. Instead of planning out a trip to the library, browse the three, different floors of the Schwob library. Near the Information Commons Area, various art pieces adorn the perimeter of the computer area; yet, there are numerous historical resources to read within the CSU Archives, located on the third floor. The CSU Archives serves as a repository documenting the history of Columbus State University, the city of Columbus, as well as, and the broader Chattahoochee Valley area. Whether you wish to inquire about the Columbus and Chattahoochee Valley area history or wish to observe eclectic art work— The Schwob Memorial has it.

Check Out Films on Demand!

Did you know CSU Libraries subscribes to educational films such as those produced by BBC, PBS, The History Channel, National Geographic and much more? This can all be accessed through Films on Demand (FOD). Through this database, you have the option to create a playlist, share, and stream your favorite videos!  In addition, FOD covers a wide variety of topics from Anthropology to Music & Dance to Political Science; there are thousands of films to choose from!  

To access FOD, go to the CSU Libraries' website, http://library.columbusstate.edu/ and select GALILEO databases under "Resources." Films on Demand is listed in "Databases A-Z."  If you need the GALILEO password simply access it through your GIL account or call the Schwob Library at  706-507-8670.

Check Out the New Features for Films on Demand

You may have noticed a slick new interface and some new features when accessing the Films on Demand (FOD) database. Here are a few of highlights:

*Redesigned Interface*
The new interface is designed to make it simpler to navigate the platform and easier to find and use the videos you need. The new streamlined interface includes a revised home page that displays a dynamic list of all of the individual subjects to which each institution subscribes, showcasing recently added videos for each. In addition, each subject now has a unique landing page. To access a subject page, you can click on the new "Subjects" drop-down menu at the top of any page. To view a complete index of all of the subjects in your institution's collection, click on the new "Index" link at the bottom of any page.

*New Video Player*
The new video player provides dynamic bit-rate switching for the optimum viewing experience, automatically adjusting within a 200K-through-1.5mb-bitrate range depending on the type of device being used and available bandwidth; users no longer need to select their target bandwidth themselves from a drop-down menu. As a result of this new player, the Windows Media format is no longer available. Any users with Windows Media as their default setting will be automatically converted to the new embedded player.

*Now iPad Friendly*
All of the FOD videos have been re-encoded in H.264 format to allow playback on any iOS device. With the new video player, you can now watch any titles in your On Demand collection on an iPad, iTouch, or iPhone. And our new design is optimized to allow easy navigation of the On Demand platform from either a computer or an iPad with an Internet connection.

*New Special Collections for Key Producers*
It is now easier to browse titles from some of our most popular producers. The "Special Collections" tab at the top of every screen lists these producers; just click on any producer's logo to access a list of all their titles in your collection, organized by subject category.

*Improved Browse & Search Options*
Users can now navigate to the new Subject pages and Special Collections using an improved top navigation from any screen. Once on these pages, the new platform offers many additional sorting and filter options. The basic search has been enhanced with a new Search Assist autocomplete feature: when users type a keyword in the search box, suggested full titles or segment titles that contain that keyword appear. Users can now also cross-search multiple subjects and Special Collections using the Advanced Search tools.

*My Playlists Has Folder*
For FOD accounts, users can now create folders to better organize their playlists just as they can with favorites.

New E-Resources Guide for Films on Demand

Films on Demand is a comprehensive collection of high-quality educational videos licensed from a long established educational media distributor. Nearly 7000 videos cover a wide range of topics organized into 5 broad subjects. Individual segments subdivide each video into discrete shorter units.

The interface allows searching by title, by keywords in segments, browsing titles alphabetically, and browsing or searching within the subject areas.

The default playback for videos in this collection is Flash. Users also can select playback in Windows Media or QuickTime. Playback on PCs running Windows software allows changing the size of the video display and selecting a different playback bit rate.

Many of the titles in the collection have closed-captioning. Use the Advanced Search function to limit search results to titles with closed-captioning.

Using third-party software to capture these video streams for playback outside of the Films on Demand interface is illegal and violates the CSU Libraries license for these videos.

And special features built into the Films Demand platform allow users the ability to organize and bookmark clips, share playlists, store quick links to favorite videos, and manage their entire collection through an administrative reporting system.
